Margin rules can be tiered or instrument-specific, and losses do not stop at the initial margin merely because that amount was reserved. Account terms and applicable protections must be assessed separately.
Decide whether a report is gross or net
A long 50,000 EUR position and a short 30,000 EUR position have 80,000 EUR of gross absolute quantity but 20,000 EUR of net directional quantity in that same pair. Both measures may be useful, but they answer different questions. Netting across different instruments requires additional assumptions about economic relationships. A broker operations report should identify the aggregation rule, include conversion timestamps and retain the underlying positions for review.
Reference exposure with a declared conversion
This synthetic worksheet treats a forex position as linear and uses one illustrative EUR/USD rate. It does not model fees, changing prices or cross-instrument offsets.
