Quick answer
A profit target is a defined eligibility condition, not simply a positive account result. Specify the reference capital, qualifying profit measure, included costs and any requirement to close positions. Reaching a displayed number does not prove that every condition for a phase transition has been met.

State the target amount and its reference
A percentage target needs a named base such as initial simulated capital. Later deposits, corrections or account changes should not silently change that reference unless the terms allow it. Record the target’s effective rule version and evaluation phase. FTMO’s objectives provide a provider-specific example of a target connected to account balance and closed positions; different programs can impose other definitions and checks.
Reconcile gross results to the qualifying measure
A gross trading gain can exceed the threshold while commission and financing reduce the qualifying net result below it. Use the fields defined by the program and avoid subtracting costs that are already included in a platform’s reported net P/L. Preserve transaction identifiers and adjustment reasons. The arithmetic should be reproducible from the ledger or report, rather than depending on a rounded percentage card in a dashboard.
Separate floating gains from completed eligibility
Open profit may be relevant to a risk rule without counting toward a closed-profit target. A program can also require positions to be closed before a transition. The same account can therefore satisfy one displayed measure and still be awaiting another condition. Label provisional and final states clearly. Do not describe an account as passed merely because one intraday value crossed a line while other objectives or reviews remain unresolved.
Define the transition and review record
A reliable workflow records the last evaluated input, each applicable objective, any unresolved exception and the authorized transition decision. Late-posted charges or corrected trades need a stated review process. If a target was briefly reached and then lost before the relevant evaluation point, the terms determine the outcome. Software should implement that policy explicitly instead of assuming that a momentary crossing always creates an irreversible entitlement.
Gross gain above target, net result below it
Assume initial simulated capital of 25,000 units and a fictional target of 8%, or 2,000 units. Gross realized gains total 2,150, separately recorded commissions are 120 and financing is 45. Qualifying net profit is 1,985, which is 15 below the target. An additional open gain of 100 is excluded under this example’s closed-profit rule. Costs are not already included in the gross figure.
| Component | Amount | Treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Target | 25,000 × 8% = 2,000 | Required qualifying profit |
| Gross realized gain | 2,150 | Starting gain |
| Commission and financing | 120 + 45 = 165 | Subtract once |
| Qualifying net profit | 1,985 | Below target by 15 |
| Floating gain | 100 | Excluded by this declared rule |
Implementation checklist
- Record reference capital, target and evaluation phase.
- Confirm whether costs are already netted in source figures.
- Define open-position treatment and the evaluation time.
- Evaluate other objectives and exceptions before recording a phase transition.
